How To Make Tinnitus Go Away - Step By Step Action Plan

How to make tinnitus go away? It is absolutely possible but I have to tell you something upfront - it will NOT be easy. You will have to work hard in order to achieve this goal. It will not happen in 5 minutes. Frankly, because there are no drugs yet, you don't really have a choice in the matter anyway.

Step 1 - Protect Your Hearing

You may think that you can skip this step but that would be foolish. Tinnitus requires hearing damage in order to manifest itself. Over your lifetime, your hearing has become progressively more and more damaged.

It would be insane to start making progress in reducing your tinnitus but at the same time do nothing about your rate of hearing loss in your life to date. All that will happen is that you will eventually get back to the same level of tinnitus as before and your efforts will be in vain.

Avoid loud music and live events unless you wear ear protection. Do not use foam earplugs but invest a couple hundred dollars in a good set of professional plugs. These work by blocking out only background noise and you actually obtain a greater clarity of sound. This is why many sound professionals use earplugs but can still hear what they want to hear.

For the same reason, if you want to listen to music using headphones or earphones then make sure you get ones that block out as much external noise as possible. This way, you can reduce the volume to very low levels. Again, you'll gain greater clarity and actually improve your listening experience.

Step 2 - Look At Your Diet

There are many things in the modern diet that contribute to tinnitus. In fact, there are far too many to list here so I will only mention one of them because it is perhaps the most significant: salicylates.

Salicylates are a naturally occurring substance but they are well known to be involved somehow in the formation of tinnitus. You need to know the salicylate level of everything that you presently eat and limit intake of ingredients that are salicylate-rich.

For example, did you know that raspberries are rich in them? Olives and mushrooms also are too. The Livestrong website has a good article on various foodtypes and their salicylic acid content here. You may even want to consider a special diet such as the Feingold diet which is specifically low in salicylates and designed for kids with ADHD. Even if you don't want to adhere to it, it can give you some inspiration for changes you might want to make.

Step 3 - Reduce Your Stress

Stress is highly implicated in tinnitus so if you reduce it then you can help tinnitus go away. We don't exactly know how or why but what is known is that it seems to have a 2-fold effect:

First, if you are stressed then your tinnitus intensity will often rise by a notch or two. Secondly, being stressed makes you more aware of your tinnitus than normal.

Knowing the answer to defeat stress is easier said than done. It's a multi-billion dollar industry and nobody has all the answers. Nevertheless, there are a few things that you can do.

One is to take natural sedatives. These won't put you to sleep but they are a better choice than antidepressants and will help you take a calmer approach to life. One of the best ones is L-Theanine which is an ingredient found in tea, especially green tea. It seems to reduce stress and improve mood and yet doesn't appear to have any negative side effects. It even helps boost your T-cell count, indicative of a strengthened immune system response.
